What is Sudoku?

History

Sudoku, also known as südoku, su-doku or su doku, is the trendy Japanese logic puzzle (crossword / puzzle). The history of sudoku is quite recent, although some French newspapers already proposed similar number puzzles in the 19th century, it was not until the 1970s that the sudoku we know today was developed in Japan. From 2005 (when printsudoku.com started) this logic game began to become internationally popular. The word sudoku in Japanese means (sü=number, doku=only).

The rules of Sudoku and its difficulty

The rules are simple, it consists of a 9x9 grid of cells, divided into 9 3x3 quadrants, which must be filled so that all rows, columns and quadrants (sets of 3x3 cells) contain the numbers 1 to 9 without any repetition. Obviously you start with a board started with some known positions. In general, the fewer initial numbers a sudoku has, the more complicated it is, but don't be fooled. The difficulty is not only determined by this variable. At PrintSudoku.com we always try to ensure that the sudokus we generate are the most fun and with a perfectly adapted difficulty.

Sudokus to be correct must have a unique solution.

Magic Sudoku

Magic Sudoku is a variant of the traditional sudoku. It is characterized by adding the following restrictions to the original sudoku:

  • Each main diagonal also contains the numbers 1 to 9 without repetition (as do the quadrants, rows and columns).
  • In each quadrant only one unique number appears.
  • There are colored cells, the numbers in these cells must have a value equal to or less than the number of colored cells in the quadrant where they are located.

This Sudoku is more complicated, but also much more challenging and fun, do you dare?
